Determining Weight: The Key to a Safe and Successful Lift | Civil Rigging

07 Jun 2024

A critical responsibility for any rigger is accurately determining the weight of the load before attempting a lift. This task is the foundation of a safe and successful operation.

According to Ralf Notheis, Manager of Bigfoot Academy, there are three main ways to determine weight, with only one involving math. Often, the load’s weight is listed on blueprints or marked on the load itself. However, riggers must be equipped to calculate weights manually using measurements like cubic feet or square feet, especially for varying materials like concrete, steel, or wood.

Unique Challenges with Materials

Different materials require unique approaches to weight calculations. For instance, calculating the weight of steel beams differs from determining the load of concrete structures or wooden elements. Riggers must know the proper formulas and equations to compute the weights accurately based on material density and volume.

One particularly tricky scenario is estimating the weight of irregular objects, like concrete pipes or custom components. These require more advanced calculations, and a well-trained rigger should feel confident in applying the necessary equations to ensure the load is properly accounted for.

Practical Training and Safety

Training in civil rigging puts a significant focus on practical applications and safety. Riggers must not only learn the theoretical aspects of weight determination but also how to apply them in real-world conditions. This hands-on training builds the confidence needed to handle any challenges that arise on the job, ensuring both safety and efficiency.

Bigfoot Academy emphasizes that understanding weight calculations is essential for riggers to maintain safety standards on construction sites. Learning the correct methods for determining load weight helps prevent accidents, equipment failures, and other risks.

To gain these valuable skills and grow your confidence in weight determination, consider enrolling in our Civil Rigging Course and master the techniques required for safe and efficient lifting operations.
